Jerash: a Roman city in northern Jordan

Jerash, north of Amman, is known for the remains of ancient Gerasa, one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities. earthTV’s perspectives on Jerash open a view of a place where colonnaded streets, temples and the modern town sit side by side.

A closer look at Jerash

The ancient city is entered through Hadrian’s Arch, built to mark an imperial visit. Beyond it, the Oval Plaza and the long colonnaded street known as the Cardo reveal how the city was planned, while the Temple of Artemis rises above the site.

Modern Jerash has grown up beside these ruins, and the contrast between past and present is part of its character. From here, the hills and olive groves of northern Jordan invite a wider journey, with Amman within easy reach to the south.
