Saint-Malo is a sub-prefecture of the Ille-et-Vilaine. Traditionally with an independent streak, Saint-Malo was in the past notorious for piracy. Today the city is a major tourist destination, with many ancient, attractive buildings.

Saint-Malo’s ramparts enclose the streets of Intra-Muros beside the sea. The long Sillon beach extends the coastal setting beyond the walls, while offshore Grand Bé adds another landmark to the surrounding tidal landscape. Granite architecture, harbour history and broad sands give this part of Brittany a distinctive maritime character.
